The basics of auto insurance and what you need to know
A standard auto insurance policy will offer several different
areas of coverage. Your premium will depend on what areas you
want covered.
Collision
Collision coverage covers damage to your own vehicle during an
accident. Collision is generally optional unless you have
financed or leased your car in which case it is usually
mandatory.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your vehicle other than
collision. In other words you can be protected against such
things as fire, theft, vandalism, floods, etc. One general note
to keep in mind, if your car is overturned during a flood,
natural disaster etc, this will be considered collision and will
not be covered in most circumstances by comprehensive insurance.
General Liability
General liability covers injuries, death, and property damage
resulting from an accident. This is most commonly required by
law in most states and is very important.
Medical Payments
This coverage guarantees immediate medical payments for you,
your passengers, and other parties regardless of who is at
fault. It can also cover you and members of your household in
any accident involving a car even if you are on foot, in a
friends car, etc.
Underinsured on Uninsured Motorist
This coverage protects you if you are injured in an accident
involving an underinsured or uninsured motorist. There are quite
a few drivers out there in this predicament so it can be a good
coverage to consider.
